Ulaşılması güç ya da gizli evrenlerde kullanılır. Araştırmacı, ölçütlere uyan az sayıda katılımcıyla başlar; her katılımcıdan aynı ölçütleri karşılayan başkalarını önermesini ister ve zincir doygunluğa ulaşana dek sürer. Örneklemin araştırmacı yerine katılımcı ağları tarafından biçimlendirilmesi, temsil gücünü sınırlar; bu nedenle bulguların genellenmesi değil aktarılabilirliği tartışılır.
Used with hard-to-reach or hidden populations. The researcher starts with a small number of participants who meet the criteria, asks each of them to refer others who meet the same criteria, and the chain continues until saturation. Because the sample is shaped by participants' networks rather than by the researcher, its representativeness is limited; findings are therefore discussed in terms of transferability rather than generalisation.

A common mistake is to treat triangulation as a guarantee of validity on its own: different sources reaching the same conclusion is usually not confirmation but the completion of different facets of the phenomenon. It is the unit of study in ethnographic design: what is examined is the pattern, not the individuals. The group must have been together long enough for a pattern to form, which is why temporary gatherings fall outside the definition. Often confused with: the “bounded system” of case study, which is defined by its boundary rather than by a cultural pattern.
